Capabilities & Benefits

Research and vaccine testing

At VIDO-InterVac, vaccines are developed and tested based on quality science. InterVac provides capabilities to study and test emerging and re-emerging CL3 pathogens including: tuberculosis and influenza; zoonotic diseases including E. coli and Johne's disease; foodborn illness; and other diseases such as West Nile Virus, BSE and CWD.

With InterVac, Canada's capacity to develop vaccines and new methods of delivery for both humans and animals is significantly enhanced. InterVac is attracting researchers from around the world and the CL3 capabilities it provides make the facility a key player in Canada's vaccine preparedness strategy.

Vaccine technology improvements

Scientists at VIDO-InterVac work to develop novel vaccine formulation and delivery systems including powerful, naturally derived vaccine additives and needle-free methods of vaccine delivery. Known as "platform technologies", much of this work is applicable across species and diseases. VIDO-InterVac is a facility providing tremendous capacity: to improve the quality of life of animals; alleviate human suffering caused by disease with no current vaccine or a lack of effective vaccines for newborns and many people in developing countries; and increasing the competitiveness of livestock producers.

Large-scale science

InterVac offers the international scientific community access to one of the world's few human and animal health research facilities capable of using both large and small animal models. The modular design of the individual laboratory spaces permits great flexibility in research.

Teamwork and expertise

The unique facilities and the expertise of the VIDO- InterVac research teams are attracting top quality national and international researchers and students, and increasing opportunities for collaborative research.
