New $100m vaccine research facility for Sanofi Pasteur promises to enhance ongoing collaborations

Long-time VIDO collaborator Sanofi Pasteur announced this month a $100 million vaccine research facility to be built in Toronto, Ont. by 2010.

In announcing the facility, Wayne Pisano, President and Chief Executive Officer of Sanofi Pasteur, noted that global demand for new and existing vaccines is anticipated to double by the year 2016, reinforcing the importance of continued investment in research and development.

Over more than two decades, VIDO and Sanofi have collaborated in the areas of vaccine development, immunization technologies and new applications of vaccines.  Luis Barreto, Vice President of Public, Scientific & Medical Affairs at Sanofi, will join the VIDO Advisory Board in June 2008.

“This complements other initiatives in Canada, including InterVac and PREVENT here in Saskatoon, that are transforming the vaccine development landscape and speeding commercialization of vaccines critical to public health,” said Andrew Potter, VIDO director.
