E. coli outbreak-Calgary: Expert commentary on development of E. coli O157:H7 vaccine

Andrew Potter is Associate Director of Research at the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO). Dr. Potter collaborated with researchers at UBC, the Alberta Research Council and Bioniche Life Sciences Inc. on a vaccine for cattle against E. coli O157:H7, now being commercialized. By preventing the bacteria from colonizing cattle, the vaccine will protect humans from becoming infected through consuming contaminated food or water.

Dr. Potter joined VIDO in 1985 and has developed a number of vaccines for use in livestock, including the first licensed recombinant product used in animals.

To arrange an interview with Dr. Potter, please call (306) 966-1506 or email laidlawATusask.ca .

Dr. Potter can address the following questions - Where does E. coli come from? Why/how is it dangerous to humans? What are researchers doing to find a solution? What will be the challenges of implementing widespread use of the vaccine?
