Alternatives to antibiotics - development and improvement of poultry vaccines
Yolk sac infection (YSI) is the most common cause of early chick mortality. The disease is caused by a wide range of bacteria including coliform bacteria, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Proteus, and Salmonella. YSI is managed by on-farm practices, heavy culling at the farm level, and the administration of antibiotics. Concerns with antibiotic use has led to a need for an alternative approach.
We plan to isolate and study the virulence of bacterial pathogens from affected broiler farms, and evaluate the efficacy of immune stimulants as a non-antibiotic solution for the control of YSI.
